The warrior and the modern business both have a unique understanding of timing. In days of old, the warrior spoke of the moment of understanding or awareness as “Sen”. Sen stands for the nano-second of awareness when you realize something.
The warrior speaks of the moment of when they became aware of danger or an attack and when they reacted to it and defeated their opponent.
The first level is Go-No-Sen which mean the moment after the moment, or slightly after they became aware, they launched their counter-attack and defeated their enemy. This is the classical method of self-defense and where 80% of all martial artists spend their time thinking and training at.
The second level of thinking is Sen-No-Sen or the moment of the moment. That means at the very precise moment the warrior became aware, they reacted or in other words a stop-hit counter the attack at the very moment the attack began.
The highest level of training is Sen-Sen-No-Sen or the moment before the moment. In other words, a split second before the awareness came about, the counter was in place to eliminate the threat in the first place, before it even existed. This is the land of the top 5% of all warriors, the place where they understand and live in pro-activity and creating their future before it exits.
Take this understanding to the land of marketing and business, and what the top 5% of modern business owners do is understand their market and what they want before ever spending one dime on marketing costs. They do their research using ad words and know how many people are looking for a specific product, and then go out and produce a solution for that market niche.
Even the new reality TV shows are great marketing machines. Take for example American Idol. The have a show where they have an audience vote on contestants letting the show pick the best product to produce and at the same time produce a buyers list. Brilliant!
The average consumer watches loving to watch the majority of the contestant making fools of themselves, while at the same time branding the winners of the shows and locking them under contract before even producing the first album or spending one penny of advertising. Great idea!
Recently, a young man from southern Wales, lacking self-confidence and un-assure of his talents, stepped on the stage and with the audience support has launched a new career.
Please watch the video below and try and be self-aware of the moment. You know what I am talking about… the moment where you have a paradigm shift and your opinion shifts from “Oh no, not another one of them” to “Wow this person may have some talent”. If you understand that Simon runs a production company and has first shot at signing the contestants up on contract from these shows, you will understand the concept of Sen-Sen-No-Sen and the world of marketing and business.
